Brian Baker's Funeral Costs

My dear friend, Brian Baker, to say he was a family man with a heart of gold would be an understatement! To know Brian truly was to love him! He had a big heart which always had room for more people to love. His smile and personality was infectious, and he was full of love – love for his Lord Jesus Christ, for his sweet wife Kendra, for his wonderful children, for his many friends and even for people he would meet wherever he was. He loved to make friends, and I feel so blessed to have been one of them.
Seven years ago when Brian and Kendra were in their mid 50s, instead of planning for a retirement of travel and leisure, they opened their hearts to adopt four young children who were in desperate need of a loving home. They poured their heart, soul and energy into raising these precious children. Despite their health challenges Brian and Kendra make sure the kids do their homework and chores after school, to be respectful of others and to show proper manners. They also give firm but loving discipline when needed, and their kids are turning out great! My kids and others kids at school and in their neighborhood love spending time with the Baker children!
Because of their health issues both Brian and Kendra had to retire early, which created financial challenges raising their kids on a reduced fixed income, especially as the cost of health care continues to increase significantly. They looked to obtain life insurance for each of them but could not find a company who would insure them because of their health issues. Then two years ago Brian was diagnosed with liver cancer. Even with Medicare, their share of his medical bills have mounted into the tens of thousands of dollars. Brian has been on the waiting list to get a new liver for the past year. Then a month ago he finally made it to the top of the list and got a new liver!
After three weeks of recovering from his surgery Brian finally returned home to the delight of his family and friends, especially Kendra. This amazing woman had been juggling caring for the kids and getting them ready to go back to school while also spending time with Brian at the hospital. Brian and Kendra were so relieved to have his cancer behind him and excited for their future together and raising their kids. With his new lease on life Brian planned to do something he’s wanted to do for a long time - start a classic car repair business to bring them back to their glory, which would also help bring in extra income to start paying off the mounting debt from their medical bills.
Brian was a morning person and would often make calls early in the morning. So when I got a call from Brian’s phone this past Thursday morning I expected the usual cheerful greeting from my buddy. Instead I was given the tragic news from his family that Brian unexpectedly passed away that morning. Like so many, I was stunned at the news, and my heart ached so much for not only losing my good friend, but also for Kendra and the children. Kendra is understandably heartbroken and overwhelmed at the thought of life without her love Brian to help in the now the long and difficult road ahead of raising their four young children alone in her retirement years.
With permission from Kendra, who was overwhelmed to tears at the offer to raise money for her family, this GoFundMe was created to raise money for Brian’s funeral. I am hoping that with the help of family, friends, the community and the caring world, we will be able to raise enough money to not only cover the costs of the funeral but also help with the medical bills and living expenses for a while.
