Bri's Dental School Tuition

Hello everyone!

My name is Briany Staine. I was born in the city of Belmopan, Belize (btw you should definitely put my little jewel Belize on your bucket list for a visit!). I grew up in a single-parent household with my mother and brother.

After graduating high school, I went on to Saint John's college ending my first semester with a 3.4 GPA. However, despite every intention to improve and excel academically, somewhere along the journey I lost my way for a bit. After my 2nd year, I decided I ABSOLUTELY needed to make a change. Determined to make a push to the end, I completed my Associate's degree in Biology. Obtaining the biology degree was only my first step toward my ultimate goal of becoming a Dental surgeon.
Dentistry is just absolutely magical! Seeing the transformation of people's smiles after just a few hours or a few short appointments brings absolute warmth to my heart.  I interned in Dr. Osbert Usher’s Dental Clinic(my dentist since childhood) during the summer holidays, and it was such a fulfilling experience. I decided that this is definitely the career path for me.

Well, here I am today, enrolled in the Doctor of Medical Dentistry program at the University of Technology, Jamaica. So far, I have been enjoying the program. The workload is very very heavy, but I am putting in the time effort that I need to succeed. Unfortunately, I've had a wrench thrown into my machine. The cost of the program is $28,000 USD per year (far more than my parents and family can afford but we are still pushing forward). I have tried several avenues to gain money for my studies to ease the financial burden, these attempts have been unsuccessful.

In August 2019, I began semester 1 of my second year in the Doctor of Medical Dentistry degree program.  Unfortunately, my financial difficulties still persist. I am currently attending classes and fully participating in the academic program. However, I was unable to formally register for the semester since I still had an outstanding balance of USD $5,345 from the Summer(3rd) semester of Year 1. There was also a 30% deposit necessary on fees for Semester 1 which was USD $3,000. For that semester, I received a sizable donation from an anonymous donor. This allowed me to clear the outstanding balance, as well as to put the 30% deposit necessary to become registered.
For semester 2, however, the problem persisted. I was not able to clear the remaining balance in order to become registered. I still continued to attend classes, despite my situation. I put in my application for a student loan, but with the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, I have since experienced huge delays in its processing. The pandemic placed an even larger financial burden on my family, putting a strain to meet the deadlines for registration.  We have tried to pay as much as we can, but we simply cannot do much more in such a short time.

Therefore, I am humbly asking for your kind assistance in order to be ‘financially cleared’ of the arrears from the previous semester, and for the fees for the current semester which approximately amounts to USD $9,000.
