BrewAble Coffee Cafe

Over 80% of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities are unemployed nationwide, and a group of local volunteers want to make an impact on that statistic right here in Alpharetta. Under the guidance of Envision Alpharetta, the all-volunteer planning committee of BrewAble is opening a coffee concession with a mission--to provide meaningful employment and community connections for people with intellectual or developmental disabilities by creating an opportunity to train, learn and excel as employees in a café setting.

Community volunteers, some of whom have children with autism spectrum disorder, have been meeting for over a year, solidifying the concept, mission, values and location of BrewAble. They are now ready to announce their plans and get input and help from the Alpharetta community so that a dream becomes reality. According to volunteer Jeanette Dümmer, “Parents and families of children with ID/DD are acutely aware of the poor employment outlook once their children become adults. In Georgia, a young person no longer receives job support and training assistance at school once they become 22. While some find work with a flexible and supportive employer, many will not. Isolation after high school is a real and debilitating problem in our community.” This concern is what motivated her to work with Envision Alpharetta to start BrewAble.

The idea of creating employment opportunities for people with ID/DD is not unique. BrewAble volunteers have been inspired by Bitty and Beau’s in North Carolina and Independent Grounds in Kennesaw. Jeanette says, “After attending a community meeting two years ago where so many passionate people spoke in favor of creating a space for our family members with special needs at the new Alpharetta Arts Center and knowing about all of the awesome resources available here in Alpharetta, I am confident that we can accomplish great success in a café setting for people with disabilities here. We have been so blessed to find partners within the City of Alpharetta, Alpharetta Rotary, Fulton County Schools and local churches as well as private citizens who have donated their time and professional expertise.” With a target opening of early 2019, BrewAble now needs the greater Alpharetta and North Fulton community to join their mission.

North Fulton’s civic, business, faith and disability community members are cordially invited to come learn more about BrewAble by following us on facebook, twitter, and Instagram.  From its inception, the BrewAble group believed it was important to be located in or near downtown Alpharetta, in a location that is easily accessible with great parking. BrewAble volunteer Mary Ulich says, “We are so excited that BrewAble will be located in the Alpharetta Community Center on Roswell Street, near downtown Alpharetta, and adjacent to Wills Park.  We look forward to working with the community to fund the renovation of the lobby there into a lobby/coffeehouse.  We plan on brewing great coffee, but our tagline is “Brewing Confidence”. Every person has the capacity to contribute when they are part of a supportive work setting. We know each of our employees that has a disability will be able to reach greater heights by working together with the community, so we also plan on brewing community, communication, collaboration, cooperation, and commitment to support this project and the individuals who work there.”  The BrewAble steering committee hopes the greater North Fulton Community will donate to efforts to bring this meaningful project in Alpharetta to completion.
