Brevity Special Issue: Experiences of Disability

We would like to ask for your help in raising $1,800 to support a special issue of Brevity: A Journal of Concise Literary Nonfiction on Experiences of Disability.
Modeled on past successful special issues (Issue 53: Race, Racism, and Racialization and Issue 49: Experiences of Gender ), our editorial team of Keah Brown , Sarah Fawn Montgomery, and Sonya Huber will be working with readers and Brevity staff to selection submissions for a special issue to be focused on experiences of illness and disability. We are looking for work that considers all aspects of illness and disability: what it is, what it means, how our understanding of disability is changing. We want essays that explore how disability is learned during childhood, lived over the entire course of a life, and how our changing understanding of disability shapes the way we experience ourselves and others. We are looking for flash essays (750 words or fewer) that explore the lived experience of illness and disability, we well as encounters with ableism, and that show readers a new way to understand the familiar, or give voice to underrepresented experiences.
The submission portal is now open with a deadline of March 1, 2020. We will be publishing the issue in September 2020. Please click the link for details about how to submit.
We are thrilled to be able to feature a contribution from Esmé Weijun Wang , a novelist and essayist. She is the author of the New York Times-bestselling essay collection, The Collected Schizophrenias (2019), for which she won the Graywolf Nonfiction Prize. Her debut novel, The Border of Paradise, was called a Best Book of 2016 by NPR. She was named by Granta as one of the “Best of Young American Novelists” in 2017 and won the Whiting Award in 2018. We are seeking to raise $1,800 to pay each of our authors and to supply honoraria for our anchor authors. For more than two decades, Brevity: A Journal of Concise Literary Nonfiction has published well-known and emerging writers working in the extremely brief essay form, along with craft essays and book reviews. Though still committed to the mission of publishing new writers, Brevity has been fortunate over the years to include the work of three Pulitzer prize finalists, numerous NEA fellows, Pushcart winners, Best American authors, and writers from India, Egypt, Ireland, Spain, Malaysia, and Japan. Authors published in Brevity include Roxane Gay, Diane Seuss, Jennifer Finney Boylan, Caitlin Horrocks, Ira Sukrungruang, Rigoberto González, and Jenny Boully.

Sonya Huber is the author of five books, including Opa Nobody, Cover Me: A Health Insurance Memoir, and the essay collection Pain Woman Takes Your Keys and Other Essays from a Nervous System. Her essays have appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, Brevity, Creative Nonfiction, The Atlantic, and other outlets. Sarah Fawn Montgomery is the author of Quite Mad: An American Pharma Memoir (The Ohio State University Press 2018), and three poetry chapbooks, including Regenerate: Poems of Mad Women (Dancing Girl Press 2017). Her work has been listed as notable several times in Best American Essays, and her poetry and prose have appeared or are forthcoming in various magazines including Brevity, Crab Orchard Review, DIAGRAM, Electric Literature, LitHub, The Normal School, Passages North, The Poetry Foundation, The Rumpus, Split Lip Magazine, Southeast Review, Terrain, and others.
