Bret Sloan is a farmer in Washington. He is also a friend of mine, whom I have known for 20 plus years.
Like most of his neighbors in Douglas and Okanagan Counties, he has been devastated by the wildfires. Bret is luckier than most, and has only lost about 400 acres, but his farm is now an oasis, surrounded by dirt and sand and ash, with fire damaged land 360 degrees around what’s left of his farm.
His oasis, and a few others scattered around the two counties, are now the only available land for all the wildlife that has escaped the devastation, with hundreds of thousands of acres around him destroyed. And with winter coming, these animals do not stand a chance. Thousands of animals will starve without help. Deer, bear, cougars, rabbits, raccoons, porcupines, fox, skunk, etc. etc.
So Bret, who is about a good a man as I know is doing something about it. He has been purchasing and delivering feed and apples and hay (out of his own pocket……..and those pockets aren’t deep) out to the animals on his land, which has in turn started a campaign in his area to do the same thing in the other small pockets of untouched land amid the devastation.
Donations will go to feed local wildlife while the area recovers. His donations will be used to make feed stations throughout the counties. It will go toward several semi truckloads of deer pellets, hay, and alfalfa.
I encourage you all to give a little, to give what you can, and help a genuinely good, selfless man care for his community and country.
