Taking Down Cancer for Brecker

This is our adorable 5 year old nephew, Brecker. Brecker has been diagnosed with Dermatofibrosarcoma Protuberens (DFSP) a rare and slow growing type of cancer that only affects 1 in 1 million and on average, there are only 200 diagnoses’ per year.
Brecker’s parents noticed a spot on his inner thigh when he was about 2 years old. During routine visits with their Pediatrician, they would mention this spot and it was always dismissed. 2 months ago, Brecker was being seen by a different doctor and this doctor recommended that Brecker be seen by a specialist to make sure this spot was nothing concerning. Brett, Brecker’s amazing dad, quickly got Brecker an appointment and it was decided that this spot be surgically removed. The surgeon told Brett that he expected the pathology report to come back benign. On November 11, we were heartbroken to hear that it was not.
Brecker is having a second surgery tomorrow morning at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. The doctor’s want to remove more of the surrounding tissue in hopes to get all of the cancerous cells.
No parent should ever have to hear “Your child has cancer”. Just that alone is devastating enough. We hope to help lessen the financial burden for Brett. He is a High School teacher and coach and one of the very best fathers I have ever seen. A diagnosis like this turns a family’s life upside down and Brett is doing a tremendous job taking care of everything. I know this is the time of year where most are spending more money than normal and there may not be a lot of ‘extra’. It is also a time of giving and a time to reflect our life blessings such as our family and friends. Any donation would be appreciated more than you could ever know.
