My name is Sarah Breault, and I live in Greenville, South Carolina with my husband Jeff. Together we have built a wonderful life. We met in Columbus, Ohio in 2008. We were married on an exceptional New Years Eve night in 2010. We knew we wanted a family, and so we started working on having a baby right away. We'd actually started fertility treatments three months before our wedding, because we knew that my Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome would be a problem. After a few years of trying various medications, we moved to Greenville, South Carolina where we started receiving treatment from Dr. Payne at Piedmont Reproductive and Endocrinology Group in 2014. Jeff had taken a wonderful new job to bring us here, and the higher pay meant we could move from medications to intrauterine insemination (IUI), which was several thousand dollars a "round". Our new health insurance didn't cover our treatments, so we paid out-of-pocket. After three rounds of IUI we decided to take a mental and emotional break. "It'll happen when you stop thinking about it," said almost everyone we knew. Sadly, no matter how much we tried (and try we did!!) we were never successful.
In 2017 we started looking into invitro fertilization (IVF). For those who don't know, IVF is extremely costly, with a single round (including egg retrieval and insemination, plus an embryo transfer) costing upwards of $12,500. That didn't include the cost of the medications needed to induce ovulation and prime the body for the embryo transfer--another $5,000. Through the generosity of friends who helped us raise $1,000, plus contributions from our families (another $5,000) and me taking out a personal loan, we were able to make it happen. We were so excited. Over 20 eggs were harvested from my ovaries. After insemination and careful monitoring, we were left with 10 PERFECT-looking embryos. All of them were 4AA's on the grading scale, the best you can expect. We were overjoyed the day of our embryo transfer. I carried the photo of our transferred embryo in my purse for the 12 days between transfer and testing. I went through a variety of symptoms in that time, all of which people said meant that I was pregnant. On the day of our blood test to find out I woke up with cramps and bleeding. I knew it was my period. The blood test that morning confirmed it--we were not pregnant.
Now we are faced with an impossible choice -- raise another $5,000 to do another embryo transfer (no need for more egg harvesting, as we have 9 frozen embryos), or abandon our dream.
We cannot take out another loan, and we are tapped out on credit cards and borrowing against 401ks. We do have a $1,000 credit from our fertility clinic though, which is why this campaign's goal is $4,000. We pray that there are people out there who are willing to help us see this dream through. All money raised will go directly to the cost of the transfer--no money will be used to pay off existing debts or to be used for any other purpose.
This journey has been tough. It's been nearly 8 full years and thousands of tears. We are so lucky to be surrounded by so many prayer warriors, and we thank you all for your support, whether monetary or otherwise.
