Breathe is a registered charity in England and Wales (charity no. 1095715) – our mission is to raise funds for the provision of medical equipment and services to help and support sick children; from the purchase of life-saving equipment for newborn babies and/or specialist equipment to funding research into the prevention of neo-natal traumas.

At this year's Breathe Charity Ball at The Grand Hotel on Saturday 8 September 2018 we will primarily be raising funds to purchase a new CFM – a cerebral function monitor. This is a monitor that measures brain waves in newborn babies, who may for example, have suffered a lack of oxygen to the brain during delivery. This equipment could also help to determine whether the babies need any specialist cooling treatment & most importantly has also proven to increase positive outcomes by 30% of cases, by helping to reduce risk of any permanent brain damage. We hope to provide this kit for the Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath which is supported by the Trevor Mann Baby Unit team. Approx. cost £20,000

In addition to which, we would love to be able to raise funds to help support the following:

A new research tool, which is being investigated by Dr Heike Rabe.  This tool measures a baby’s heart rate, as soon as they are born while their skin is still wet, so there is minimal contact with the baby’s skin which helps to prevent skin damage. Approx. cost £1,000

Equipment for simulation: these are monitors that simulate the monitors that are in the neonatal intensive care & used for critical team training that is required to improve the resuscitation and wider team’s working skills.  Purchasing equipment for this educational purpose can be very difficult with NHS funding. Approx. cost £5,000

There is a very real shortage of funds for doctors and nurses to attend training days and conferences. Each year there is a specialist Neonatal Transport conference in the UK and finding funding to enable the doctors and nurses to go is a constant struggle. This element of expenditure of charity funds is often overlooked but vital to improving the service the team can offer families & their newborn babies. Any funds that can be used for the Sussex Transport Team and the education of staff we know would be especially gratefully received.

Earlier in July 2018, the Worcestershire Royal Hospital began building work to create a new bereavement wing. We would love to be able help to raise funds to help with the furnishings of this new project & to help create an appropriate environment for those families who need somewhere to be together in the event of such tragic circumstances.

Everything we can contribute will help!

So, on behalf of the Breathe Charity Trustees & Colette, Paul, Joe & Harry Murphy, we sincerely thank you in anticipation for your kind donation and continued support.
