Breaking the Cycle - Our Homeless

52365044_1605738465875320_r.jpegThis is the story about Tony from Portugal who now lives in a cardboard box.

He lost his job during the pandemic, like many, but with no family support and no help from the government, little by little the money he had saved up disappeared and he was kicked out of his rented apartment in Madrid.

He was forced to live on the streets. The first night scared and alone he was robbed of the little he carried with him. He made some friends for security and just like Tony they lost their jobs and are trying to survive. There are wonderful organizations like Bokatas and Caritas in Madrid that stop by once a week to bring him and the other homeless people food and warm drinks.

I have had the pleasure to meet Tony, spend time with him and I have learned a lot about him. He doesn't do drugs or drink. He has 5 beautiful children, most of them adults now, living in Portugal. I don't think they know about his situation. Would you tell your children?

He is a good person in a horrible situation. This could happened to any of us.

Why am I starting this GoFundMe?
Because I have worked with the homeless and I know how crucial the first 6 months of living on the streets are. It has been 3 months for Tony and he still has energy, he wants to work, he smiles everyday and he tries to stay positive. This is that crucial time to help him but I cannot do it alone.

What does Tony need: He needs food and water. The bare necessities. he needs a place to stay (a room) for a month or so while he looks for jobs.

The good news: He did receive a call back to work at a churreria stand here in Madrid starting in December but if they know he is homeless they might not give him the job. He takes showers at a local church for .50 but like anything there are regulations and sometimes he can't use their facilities.

Everytime I see him he has his hair combed,  a cleanly shaven face and he is always wearing his mask. He wants to be normal again.

Please, if you have any extra money this week or someone has done something nice for you, pay it forward and help Tony out. This is his chance to go back to a dignified life that he and so many more deserve.

I will continue to update this message as I receive more updates from Tony about his situation.

With all my heart, thank you!

PS: I will used the money to find Tony a room and provide him with food and water while he gets back on his feet. I would never take a dime. Every donation is for Tony, you have my word.
