Donation protected
This event is an exciting fundraising collaboration between Bray Rowing Club & Greystones Rowing Club. The aim of the event is to raise much needed funds to increase participation in traditional skiff rowing in the communities of Bray & Greystones.

The Challenge is for each club to row 250 km culminating in a total rowing distance of 500 km. Multiple crews will row legs of the journey starting in Bray and Greystones.

The benefits of participation in sport are well proven and both clubs would like to be able to increase their youth membership and continue to offer all adult rowers an opportunity to improve their physical and mental well-being. Crews will be made up of all club members from 14 years old to senior rowers working together to achieve a common purpose.

Bray Rowing Club urgently need funds to facilitate our growing membership. The funds raised during the Braystones event will be used to purchase a safety boat.

“The East Coast Rowing Council stipulates that all regatta host clubs shall be responsible for the provision of a course maintenance boat and a safety boat. “

The purchase of this boat is essential for the clubs continued participation in the regatta series. Facilities maintenance, boat maintenance, training, transport etc. are all costs that are incurred by the club on an ongoing basis. Any support big or small is appreciated by the club and will go a long way to enhancing opportunities for people to participate in the wonderful sport of rowing.

This will be a social distanced event adhering to all the current Sporting Ireland Covid-19 restrictions and advice. Only event participants are allowed come to either clubhouse but supporters can watch the event from a distance anywhere along the coast. We will also be posting videos and updates to social media throughout the day.

What is Skiff Rowing

Skiff boats were originally a working boat found along the eastern seaboard of Ireland. Freelance pilots called hobblers raced against each other in their wooden boats to pilot large ships into port. The winning boats received contracts from the larger boats
to load and unload whilst in port.

The tradition of skiff rowing is now carried on through a number of clubs on the east coast.  Bray Rowing Club was established in 1935 making it one of the oldest sporting clubs in Bray. The club currently operates out of a small building on Bray Seafront and currently owns four skiff boats. Rowers of all abilities are welcome at the club and junior members are very actively involved in all aspects of the club.

Crews have competed very successfully in east coast regattas, National Rowing Championships, and have also participated in Ocean to City (international race based in Cork), the Celtic Challenge (Arklow to Wales) etc.

Club membership has been growing steadily over the past number of years and open days are facilitated throughout the rowing season. The club have seen surges in interest in membership in the last number of years and are keen to facilitate new members from all backgrounds.
