Brave Single Mom and Her Two Hopeful and Scared Children
This mom came from Mexico to San Luis Obispo in April 2018 seeking Asylum. Her husband was assaulted and was a victim of a horrible crime that resulted in his death. She tried to move to another area but was threatened with her life because someone believed she was working with authorities to identify other gang members. For the sake of her children, she fled the country. After arriving, her 14-year-old daughter in the place they were staying, was attacked by a woman with a criminal history with a knife and was physically injured and traumatized. There are criminal charges pending against the attacker with the San Luis Obispo County prosecutors. Due to this crime, the family was forced to move, becoming homeless for a period of time.
Mom has faithfully been keeping her monthly ICE appointments and is contacted weekly by a worker. ICE was made aware of the family’s address change. Unfortunately, that information was not communicated to the court in Los Angeles and when a letter was sent to the family for a court hearing, it was mailed to the wrong address. This all happened during the government shutdown, which affected so many people’s lives in such negative ways. With the help of a few people advocating for her and her school-age children, she was able to contact a good attorney and the attorney filed a motion to reopen her case which the court recently granted. She was forced to borrow to pay for the attorney’s fees. Now, she not only needs to pay that money back but also needs additional funds to pay the attorney new fees for her to apply for asylum and/or a U-Visa. This is the only opportunity she and her children have to stay in the country legally otherwise they will be forced to return to their native country where they received death threats.
This is a humble, hardworking woman that is earning minimal wages cleaning homes and cooking meals for others but the majority of her earnings are used for living expenses.
She asks for nothing but help keeping her family safe in the United States.
