Brantley's Trans Am to support LAB

Hey, I'm Brantley.
Please help me raise funds for road safety for everyone across our nation, regardless of mode of transportation. I'm racing the premier 4,200 mile bike race across the country, the Trans America Bicycle Race , in June 2019 to raise awareness and funds to help reduce the record number of traffic fatalities happening locally and across the country.
Our roads are more dangerous than ever, and this means a lot to my family and me. This is maybe a counterintuitive rationale for racing the Trans Am - spending ~270 hours of moving time on open roads with sometimes tight quarters and/or truck traffic. The way I see it, we’re just as susceptible to this danger in our own neighborhoods as we are crossing the country – so instead of me being inhibited by the latter, and I’d rather challenge others to be proactive about fixing the former.
Giving these accounts has become newly regular as someone in the field of bike advocacy and Vision Zero , but it never gets less demanding. Everything about the way I live my life, down to my existential foundations, has been most heavily shaped by the drunk driver who plowed into the back of my mom’s car when I was 16. She’s still with us, with defiant positivity to boot, but her mobility and independence are largely lost and there have been a lot of rough times because of it. Last December my girlfriend was hit while riding home from work. The driver fled the scene, and Rachel got to have facial surgery as a Christmas present. Like a lot of bike riders, I’ve been on the receiving end of a lot of harrassment; guns brandished, horrible language, pushed off the roads, and even assault (and a state senator represented that person in court to get the charges dropped). The legendary pioneer of ultra endurance bike racing, Mike Hall, former record holder of the very race I’m attempting next year, was killed by a driver during a race in Australia, and to my knowledge three people have been killed by drivers in the history of the Trans Am.
I’d like you to help me by contributing a donation for the League of American Bicyclists , the 138-year-old national organization leading the significant effort to make streets safer, particularly but not exclusively for bike riders.
