Schmitz Family Expenses

Donation protected
My Name is Kaitlynn and our family is from Festus, MO. I am the oldest daughter to Brandt Scmitz's.

October 23, 2017 started like most Mondays, the dreaded first day of the week. The day was almost over and at 11:00 pm. Nothing could have prepared us for what was to happen and the challenges we were going to face.  I received a phone call I will never forget. Brandt has been in an accident and the ambulance is on its way to get him now.  As I headed to the hospital I was filled with panic, wondering what was happening, was this a dream.  Then I saw it. I was at the scene of the accident. The highway was awash with the lights of 6 police cars, 3 fire trucks, 2 tow trucks, and there amongst it all, my mom. She was there. She was on her way home when she got the call.  Over the speaker came the disembodied voice,  “Ma’am your husbands has been in a sever accident, he rear ended a dump truck, and help is on the way”.  That’s when she heard it, in the background, my Step dad screaming in agony “I’m sorry, I’m so sorry”.

After passing the scene I managed to catch up to ambulance and follow my Step Dad all the way to the hospital. It felt like forever, my fear and anxiety rose along the way. My mom and I were shown to a room, there, both knees bandaged, laying on the stretcher, Brandt. The sent him for x-rays, blood work, CT scans, and more tests than we could count or remember. Doctors, nurses, and paramedics kept telling him how lucky he was to be alive. Brandt should not have survived. He had a guardian angel protecting him that night, protecting us all.

Though lucky to be alive, we found out after the battery of tests that Brandt had torn both of his quads where the tendons attach to the kneecaps. The medical term given to us, bilateral quadriceps rupture. At the time, we did not realise or know what this meant, nor what it would mean for the future. We did not care, we were just blessed that he was alive, whatever was to come, we could get through it. Then, within 24 hours, he had surgery to repair both knees. The doctor said the surgery went well, but this is the beginning of a long road. Recovery would mean that Brandt would be wheelchair bound with no mobility in his lower extremities for approximately 6 weeks.  Brandt will then have to learn how to walk and bend his legs all over again.  This is going to require a lot of changes. Changes to our home, our schedules, our lives as a whole, changes I know we have not even thought of yet.  Our family is asking for your help. We need him to receive the best treatment and care possible.  Please help in any way, in any amount you can, the majority of his care will not be covered by insurance. Every cent will help and all prayers are welcome and needed.
