Friendly, helpful and always upbeat, many of us know Dewey through his work at the Solvang school and music performances throughout the Santa Ynez Valley. He is a wonderful son, a devoted husband and the best friend anyone could have.
Dewey has struggled with epilepsy since childhood, but recently things took a turn for the worse. He was admitted to the ICU for multiple days with amnesia, speech problems, and recurring seizures. After exhausting all attempts to fix the seizures with medication, the Doctors, Dewey and his family have agreed that brain surgery is the next step.
In order to begin the process, Dewey was admitted to Cottage hospital for monitoring while multiple seizures were induced; the data gathered was presented to specialists at UCLA Medical to determine the best approach for his surgery. The 9 day hospital stay was traumatic, both for Dewey and his network, and was just the beginning of the road to recovery. He now struggles with short term memory loss, and finding words.
Five months later, Dewey is scheduled at UCLA for surgery. In the interim, due to the frequency and severity of his seizures, Dewey has been unable to work or drive, and disability payment has not come through, yet, for them, so they struggle financially.
Jenny has not left her husband's side throughout this process; she must be ready in case of a seizure or if other medical issues arise at any time; it is a huge commitment and prevents her from working outside the home, or continuing her Bachelor’s in Nutrition.
