Braintree Officers Support Fund

Donation protected
The “Braintree Officers Support Fund" has been established by the Braintree Police Officers Association and the Braintree Police Working Dog Foundation, Inc. (d/b/a Braintree Officers Support Fund) to assist Officer Donald Delaney and his fellow Officers William Cushing Jr., Paul Hamilton, John Hurley and Ryan McHugh who were all involved in the traumatic and tragic events of May 5, 2017.

On that day, while attempting to serve a warrant on a registered guest at the Motel 6 in Braintree, Massachusetts, Braintree Police Officer Donald Delaney was shot and seriously wounded by an armed gunman.

Approaching the motel room to which they had been directed, fully uniformed Braintree Police Officers identified themselves.  The suspect opened his room door very slightly.  Without provocation or warning, the suspect began firing his weapon through the door.  One bullet struck Officer Delaney in the head.  A firefight ensued.  The suspect fired at the Officers through the door and the Officers returned his fire.  Despite being shot in the face, Officer Delaney, a Marine veteran, continued to return the suspect’s fire while covering his fellow officers.  These Officers’ actions in the confined hallway prevented further carnage by the gunman.

The suspect remained barricaded inside his motel room. Officers on scene moved Officer Delaney out of harm’s way while awaiting medical transport.  Officer Delaney was rushed by ambulance to Boston Medical Center, where his wounds were treated.  Only after entry by SWAT was it discovered that the suspect had taken his own life.

Officer Delaney suffered a terrible injury; it will take substantial time for him to rehabilitate and recover.  Many Officers were involved in this life and death incident.  While some wounds are visible, others are not.  We expect that the Town will fulfill its legal obligations to pay direct medical costs and base pay for injured officers, but that does not cover all of the losses incurred by these brave Police Officers and their families.  The Braintree Police Officers Association and the Braintree Police Working Dog Foundation stand ready to help, but we cannot do it on our own.  That is why we ask for your support.

Please consider helping Officer Delaney and all those who protect our community every day by donating to the Braintree Officers Support Fund.  All funds collected will be distributed directly to the Officers involved and their families.

Thank you,

The Braintree Police Officers Association &
Braintree Police Working Dog Foundation, Inc. (d/b/a Braintree Officers Support Fund)
