Braider's Fund

Braider came to me 2 months ago, when I offered to foster him after his owner died and he needed a new home.  By the end of the first week I was falling for him, and by the end of the second week, I knew he was mine.  He's sweet, easy going, trusting, polite and everything a good Rottweiler should be.  He's wonderful and I feel lucky that he came into my life.  I wrote about his journey to me on my blog here: Giving Thanks to Dog .

On December 8th I took him to the vet for what I thought was a skin rash/allergies, and they recommended I take him to emergency care - NOW.  It turns out he has something called immune mediated  thrombocytopenia or ITP .  This is a condition where the body's immune system attacks its own platelets, the cells responsible for clotting the blood. When platelet levels are low, clotting is slowed and spontaneous bleeding occurs.

Braider is a very sick dog and has been in ICU for 4 days now. He's had multiple blood transfusions, and due to his large size, they are very expensive. He is being given immunosuppressant steroids to stop the immune system's attack, but the treatment takes 3-5 days, sometimes even as long as 7 days, to start working.  The good news is that  most dogs recover and go on to live normal lives.  I am praying Braider will be one of them.  I am at a point, however, that I don't know if I can go on with treatment - we are at $10,000 after only 4 days, and the high end estimate for care is nearly double that.

So I am asking for help for Braider.  It's hard to put a value on a dog. What is a life worth? In my heart I know Braider is worth all of the staggering estimate for care I received--and more, as far as I’m concerned--but the reality is I don’t have the kind of money it’s costing (not by a longshot), which is why I'm asking for help.

Braider deserves this. He's been a good boy all his life; he's had two separate owners die and left him in need of a new home. He has always been there for his people and has done everything right, with his beautiful Rottweiler heart leading the way.  If you've ever loved a dog, if you know a dog that deserved a second chance, please consider helping Braider.  Every little bit helps.  And hug your dog a little tighter tonight.
