Brad Has To Reboot His Brain.

Donation protected
On Easter Sunday 2017, my father Brad was carving the turkey for 20+ guests when he suffered a severe stroke. Fortunately he was surrounded by family and we noticed what was happening quickly before he could fall or hurt himself with the carving knife. The 36 hours following the initial stroke we're tumultuous. He was under observation and in stable condition at the hospital when we left him overnight, but his carotid artery continued to tear and early on Monday the 17th he had 2 more serious strokes. Surgeries and medication we're unsuccessful and we were told his odds of survival were 20%. He survived. The "stroking out" doctors told us to expect in his right brain didn't happen. The anticipated 3 cubic centimetres of swelling, necessitating removal of part of his skull, stayed below 3 millimetres. A day that began with the terrible expectation of loss ended with a collective sigh of relief from our entire family. Over the following days, Brad had to relearn the little things. He learned to swallow, to keep his eyes open, to hold his head up. In the following weeks he learned how to sit up, to dress himself in bed without the use of his left arm. To transfer himself to a chair without the use of his left leg. The following months saw him learn to stand, walk, and climb stairs with support. He was able to see the birth of his first Grandson and dance with his new daughter-in-law (she's tall enough to act as a replacement for his cane). Brad's physical recovery had been spectacular, as has the support of our community. However, Brad needs continued therapy beyond the physical and occupational therapies that are covered by our health coverage in order for his cognitive processes to recover. Using the Swingle and Neuromotion clinics in Vancouver Brad's cognitive recovery had been progressing, but the continued treatments bear continued cost. It's a difficult thing to express personal and private need in such a public way, and while I have few expectations, our gratitude to all those who have helped us and to those who continue to help couldn't be more complete. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

All campaign funds will be withdrawn by Marlene Bartsch and used for Neuromotion and Swingle Clinic Fees.
