Eat, Ruthi, Eat!

Due to compounding medical issues, Ruthi has had a hard time eating since birth. After months of struggling to get in needed calories to continue growing, Hudson, Lindzey and Ruthi‘s group of doctors decided it was time to intervene. At 15 months old, Ruthi underwent a medical procedure to have a gastrostomy tube placed. The purpose of the “G-tube” was to help provide the needed nourishment so that Ruthi could grow, allowing her to meet developmental milestones. The “G – tube” was an answer to prayer in many ways. For the first time in several months, Ruthi started growing. It alleviated a lot of stress for both Ruthi and Hudson and Lindzey surrounding feeding. It also gave time to get other medical issues under control such as reflux, constipation, allergies and a major oral aversion.

Ruthi is now 9 months post tube placement and has made a lot of progress. Not only is she continuing to grow and develop typically, but she has made huge improvements with her willingness and ability to accept food orally. Her favorite foods are Hershey kisses, sliced cheese and cookie cake.

Hudson and Lindzey have had numerous conversations and appointments with local therapists and doctors and while all involved in Ruthi’s care feel confident that she’s ready to be weaned, none feel comfortable taking the lead. It is a complex task. Several months ago Lindzey came across a group called Growing Independent Eaters (GIE). GIE was started by mothers of children who had feeding tubes. They struggled to find someone in the medical field who could lead the weaning process and after successfully weaning their own children, recognized there was a need for this expertise.

The Growing Independent Eaters team consists of a speech therapist, nutritionist, parent coach, and feeding therapist. Their combined expertise have lead many families to having a child who can now successfully and joyfully get all nutrition by mouth. Hudson and Lindzey have submitted the intake form, the initial assessment, that begins the process. They have heard back that Ruthi is a great candidate to start the tube weaning process.

However, GIE does not work with insurance companies because they do not work directly with children, only through consultative services. Therefore, the out of pocket expense is roughly $3000. Your love, support and prayers are so appreciated during this next transition in helping Ruthi learn to eat successfully...Eat, Ruthi, Eat!!
