Happy Graduation Day! That’s a wonderful wish heard by many 18-year-old girls each year, full of family parties, clothing for new jobs or cash for dorm room décor. But for some girls in foster care, graduation can be a very scary prospect, as they venture out on their own with no family safety net, and very little possessions.
The National Conference of State Societies, Cherry Blossom Princess Alumnae and the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments want to make this transition to independence a joyous celebration and we need your help. We’re throwing a YES I Am! Graduation Party for 35 young women of the MWCOG Child Welfare Program (the young women are from all over the DC, MD, VA area with most preparing to attend college/trade schools in NoVA.) And, you’re invited!
Y.E.S. is our “Youth Emerging Successfully” program, and 2014 is our inaugural year for the YES I Am! Graduation Party and mentoring program launch. Here’s how you can help make a young girl’s transition out of foster care a wonderful opportunity for growth and happiness. A donation of school supplies…pens, pencils, calculators, notebooks, printer paper, folders, back packs, gas cards (some are commuter students who also work), metro SMART cards (some do not have a way to class other than the metro) , PC’s or laptops, dorm or small apartment supplies, etc. Anything you would need to attend college classes or start out in a small apartment.
