This is the Pacheco family. Edwin and his family call the beautiful island of Roatan located in Honduras home. I met Edwin during my first trip to Roatan about twelve years ago. He has been the most kind and generous friend I have had the pleasure of meeting throughout my travels. As I visited more over the years I was quickly welcomed into Edwin's home and genuinely accepted as family.
Edwin has worked tirelessly in the hospitality industry over the years. He supports his immediate and even extended family at times. All while maintaining the expenses of keeping his children in private schools. The island may be paradise, however, it is no secret the public school system of Honduras is inadequate. Lacking both structure and proper funding. Edwin is hopeful a better education will bring forth more opportunities for his children. They are growing up fast and it is a privilege to see them turn into kind young adults. During one of my visits I even had the honor of walking Edwin's youngest son down the aisle at his elementary school graduation. A memory I will always hold dear to my heart.
Being a part of such momentous and joyous occasions has made myself just as inclined to be there for Edwin and his family through the difficult days over the years as well. And this has been a challenging year. COVID has undoubtedly impacted each and every one of us in the United States whether it be physically, mentally, and/or economically. However, economies reliant on a steady influx of tourism revenue, such as Roatan, are especially struggling during these unprecedented times. Travel restrictions, curfews, and the overall lack of any aid from their government has left the Pacheco family in an unfortunate financial situation. Instead of exchanging presents this holiday season my wife and I will be sending some money to Edwin in hopes of easing some of his family's financial worries. We are creating this fundraiser to perhaps inspire our family members and friends to join us and hopefully give the Pacheco family a Christmas to remember, for the right reasons.
