Please help this WW2 Vet’s Family

Boyd and Susan’s Medical Bills have overwhelmed the family upon his death.

Boyd Shaffer was a brilliant artist-naturalist and was often called a modern day Audubon by his students. He was also a World War II Veteran, and was wounded in France. Boyd was a renaissance man, working in many areas during his long life. He worked with endangered bird species in Utah and as a wildlife expert with Walt Disney studios before moving to Alaska. As a professor with the University of Alaska system, he taught both art and field biology.

He died recently at age 90 after a series of illnesses, the final one being a very aggressive form of cancer, and it left the family scrambling to find a way to retire all the medical debt that had piled up. Boyd’s wife, Susan has had some illness of her own, having to get both hearing aids and dental surgery. She still needs more dental work, including an expensive bone graft, and none of this is covered by Medicare or insurance.

Boyd’s artwork is well known, especially in Alaska, and he was known for the tireless hours he spent volunteering on many environmental projects and art projects as well. He and Susan traveled the world together during their 40 year marriage, studying the wild places, even taking students to Africa on three occasions. His students from his many years of teaching number in the thousands, and his art and volunteer work has touched people all over the world. It is hoped that through this page, people will help to retire some of the debt the family has from these troubled times of the past few years.

Boyd gave so much to so many during his lifetime, and even at the very end of it, he gave the final ultimate gift, leaving his body for scientific research in the hope that some day, his particular form of aggressive cancer can be iradicated.

It is estimated that around $28,500 would enable the family to retire the medical debt, and also help Susan get the medical treatment she so desperately needs. Any help that you could give would be greatly appreciated.
