Support Balkans Flood Victims

Donation protected
The Bosnian government says more than 1 million people, or a quarter of the population, has been affected by flooding and landslides which occurred in May 2014, comparing the destruction to that of the country’s war in the 1990s. Having survived the war and built a new life, many have again lost everything. Their houses have been completely flooded and with it, everything they own has been destroyed. Many are forced to struggle without basics, such as water, food and a place to sleep. We are truly fortunate to live in a country which is financially stable, but the Bosnian government is struggling to help all the flood victims, and there is no such thing as insurance to cover the cost of lost homes from natural disasters.

The area surrounding our hometown of Brcko (where our parents live today) was one of the worst affected areas, where the Sava River flooded dozen of villages. We wanted to help right away in the moment of tragedy, but at the same time wanted to be confident that our contribution would wind up and be fully used for what it is truly intended for. This is the reason which inspired us to research local reputable charities and find a specific family in need so we can be sure that our assistance will have a direct impact.

Our parents, Olivera and Pavle Medunic personally visited the village of Krepsic and saw first-hand the destruction and misery the flood has left behind. They were introduced to a couple in their 70s, Savo and Smilja Jevremovic, whose house was severely damaged; the old couple has lost everything they own and they currently sleep on hay in a nearby shed and it is heartbreaking to imagine that this is their only choice.

While in Krepsic, Pavle also met with Zorica Pedic, the leader of a local charity called “Be Humane, Show Your Heart – Krepsic Angels”.  The charity’s sole mission of helping struggling locals existed long before the flood occurred and they’re now focused on efforts to rebuilt, clean, and disinfect homes affected by the floods.

Our hope is to make a difference for Savo & Smilja so they can purchase food, water, mattresses, and to help them rebuild their home.  All raised funds will be sent thru the local charity “Krepsic Angels” and will be used primarily to support the Jevremovics. Any donation will make a difference and is greatly appreciated. Together we can help lessen their misery and contribute in the humanitarian effort of showing compassion and extending a helping hand when it’s needed.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts,

Bjanka Medunic Andov & Maya Medunic Hausmann
