A visual photographic history, this beautifully designed book touches on the history and mythology of this revered sacred site.  Voices of the master craftsmen and prominent Buddhist teachers involved in the reconstruction and rituals bring stunning photographs of the stupa and the story of its rebuilding and reconsecration, vibrantly to life. Mani Lama’s evocative photographs chronicle the inspiring story of a devotional community with a common purpose: restoring an ancient monument after destruction and despair. This book is testimony to a community’s resilience in the face of disaster, and to the rebuilding of this icon of human aspiration for realization.

With a well-researched historical chapter by Mimi Church and excerpts from Neils Gutschow and Keith Dowman, an informative text accompanies Mani Lama’s compelling images.

Mani Lama is a well recognized award-winning pioneer photographer of Nepal. While his main work focuses on documenting conditions in Nepal for UN agencies, the Government of Nepal, and aid organizations, Mani, born in Boudha in 1948, has passionately photographed the stupa and its surroundings and people since he got his first camera over fifty years ago.

Mani's family lineage provides him with historic links to the stupa. As a direct descendent of the Chini Lama (the hereditary guardian and custodian of the stupa) Mani had unprecedented access from the demolition to the rebuilding, to the consecration of the stupa in November 2016.

The incredible devotion of the people of Boudha and Kathmandu Valley and Tibetan Buddhists all over the world resulted in the Boudha stupa being the first major monument reconstructed after the earthquake. The work was financed entirely with donations large and small, no government assistance, and thousands of volunteers joined the specialized teams of metal workers, gilders, carpenters, painters and bricklayers who labored from dawn to dusk every day of the week. This book has come into being in the same spirit of community efforts.

To produce this book, a team of volunteers has joined Mani offering time interviewing, researching, captioning, designing, marketing, publishing and fundraising.  They are Frances Howland, Mimi Church, Jane Moore, Steve LeClerq, Pam Ross, Ian Alsop, Carroll Dunham, Eric Shrestha, and Frances Klatzel.

Help us publish this important historical work--order your book(s) now! We hope to complete and ship the book out by Spring.  Any proceeds after publication costs will be earmarked for further maintenance and restoration of the stupa.
Please forward this message to anyone you think would be interested in supporting this stunning record of resilience and devotion.
