Children in Houston have lost everything -- their homes, their schools, their communities. Their lives will recover from Hurricane Harvey but will never be the same.
The children of Houston desperately need books to escape from their devastating reality.
My name is Sharon Jones and I live in La Jolla, Calif., and, like you, am far removed from the devastation. This effort will make me -- and my children -- feel like we are making a real difference to children who have been through too much.
Can you help us provide books to the children of Houston? I have worked with many nonprofits, including San Diego Public Library Foundation, Boy Scouts of America, Postpartum Health Alliance of San Diego, Episcopal Community Services of San Diego, La Jolla Art & Wine Festival, Angel Faces, La Jolla Elementary, and Methodist Nursery School. I have been a board member and a board president. I will work hard to stretch every dollar donated and make the greatest impact possible.
After talking with my friend Bill Hagey, Barbara's widower, I decided to partner with an organization in Houston called Books Between Kids, a nonprofit in Houston that provides at-risk kids with books to build their own school libraries. The executive director, Jamie Grissom, and Books Between Kids is working closely with the Houston Independent School District. 200 schools were damaged by Hurricane Harvey; nine were destroyed and won't reopen this year. Funds raised here will help Books Between Kids get those books into the hardest hit communities of Houston.
