Ever since girl-hood, Rose has escaped mundane life by reading. Growing up, you could always find her with a book in her hand. If she was sad - she was reading, if she were lonely - she was reading, if she was meant to be doing chores and didn't want to - she was reading! And when she wasn't reading, Rose was writing. Scribbling down vague dreams and goals for her life. Scores of bushrangers and brumbies thundered across her pages and imaginary gullies and mountains created thousands of adventures for her characters. As she grew older, Rose treasured these memories, still relishing the escape from real life in the written word.
On January 5th, 2020, Rose lost everything she owned in the tragic Australian fires. Furniture, bedding, clothes, kitchen supplies, vehicles and farm equipment, beloved garden plants and much of the farm was destroyed and, along with it, Rose's treasured library and manuscripts collected from when she was young.
Rose is my cousin and we have read and written together all our lives. When she told me that her books were all gone and everything she was written was lost also, when she described how she wandered around the farm after the fire finding scraps of beloved books laying burned in the dirt, I cried. I can't imagine how it would be to lose so many memories. I immediately made it my business to restock her library and encourage many more stories to find their way on paper. I have already ordered her a beautiful new diary but as I did so, I couldn't help but wonder if other people would like to be a part of Rose's dreams also.
Please donate a few dollars to help me bring reading and writing back into Rose's life and ease the pain of loss a little. It would mean so much to me to be able to build her a library of Australian literature essentials.
