Book Benches

Public art brings people together. It encourages us to share a feeling and space with those around us. Lexington’s Book Benches Project invites YOU to sit down with our community and participate directly in delivering beautiful, charming benches for people to enjoy.  This is a collaboration among Arts Connect, LexArts and the Carnegie Center for Literacy and Learning.

Similar to Horsemania, Book Benches: A Tribute to Kentucky Authors celebrates our state’s rich heritage while providing a place to rest and inspiration for residents and visitors alike.  Thirty-five book-shaped functional benches, each illustrated by Kentucky artists and themed around different works by Kentucky authors, will be placed throughout Lexington during summer 2018.

In addition to corporate sponsorships, we are offering a Community Supported Book Bench, one that is chosen by the people for the people. The goal of $5,000 will pay for one bench which includes the shipping, storage, insurance and other expenses associated with the project, and most importantly, will pay the talented artist whose design is chosen to be painted on this functional city book bench.

Once the GO Fund Me Challenge is over and our $5,000 goal has been met, the Community Sponsors - those who have made donations to this campaign - will get to vote for their favorite design. The artwork with the most votes will be recognized as the Community Sponsored Bench (a.k.a. The coolest bench).

The Community Sponsors will be acknowledged as a group on the plaque that will go with the bench during the 6-month public exhibition, as well as in print material for the project.
Benches will be placed throughout Lexington from June - November 2018.

Any individual donation of $1,000 will receive 2 tickets to both the Gratz Park Book Bench Preview Reception on June 1 and the Gala and Auction at the Livery on November 17.

This is a delightful project that celebrates art, literature, education and Kentucky and will benefit the community. Your gift (any size) matters! Thank you for your support!
