Book: The Legacy of Sang’s Café in Salinas

Donation protected
My name is David and I write as James Edgar Skye. I am a local writer who was born, grew up, and lives in Salinas, California. In collaboration with Sara Sang, I will be writing a creative nonfiction story with the working title, The Legacy of Sang’s Café in Salinas. If you have lived in Salinas for any length of time, you know how vital Sang's Café was to our small city's history. Sara and I want you to be a part of the legacy of her family through the book. One thing that some do not know, is Sang’s Café officially closed in 2018, and writing this book with your support will preserve the Sang Legacy.

I want to share what ghostwriting is so that you understand the reason behind this GoFundMe page before we get into the details of the book. As the ghostwriter, it is my job to conduct interviews, pay for the interviews to be transcribed, write the drafts, do the edits, and pay for a second editor. There are costs for hiring a person to format the book, cover designer costs, and author copies. Then there are costs for my time as a business owner—my business is called The Bipolar Writer Ghostwriting Services. My usual fee is much higher, but Sara is a friend. I wanted to raise funds around $7000 instead of putting it all on Sara Sang to come up with the money because Sang’s Café, The Rodeo Waffle Shop, and the Rodeo Café were all staples of the town we call home—Salinas.

The book will be two-fold—the first will show the history of the Sang’s and how they came to Salinas. From the restaurant's original names, The Rodeo Waffle Shop and the Rodeo Café, when Sara’s grandparents ran it from 1947 to 1989. When the Loma Prieta earthquake hit and damaged the restaurant, her grandparents decided to retire. Afterward, her dad and uncle renovated the restaurant, and it continued to be a staple in Salinas—Sang's Café. The book will include pictures of different times of Salinas’ history the connection to the story.

The second part of the book will be the stories from the people who were a part of what made Sang’s Café a place like home for Salinas residents! This is where my experience an interviewer and writer comes into the story. I will interview customers and staff who want to share favorite memories or stories of their time in Sang's Café and what the restaurant meant to the people who live in Salinas.

If you would like to be a part of the interview process, contact me. I will leave my information below. I will serve as the ghostwriter. The interviews will happen in several ways: people can share their stories with questions I created and email them in, or I can interview you remotely on Zoom. I will do interviews in person if things setting down. You can use your real name or be anonymous. It's the stories that matter!

I chose to be a part of this project because I have memories as a kid going to Sang's Café with a large group on Saturday's to eat breakfast. I remember going to Sang's for lunch with my dad when he owned his business and getting the mountain of fried rice—my favorite meal. My parents, especially my mother, loved Sara, who was one of my mom's favorite people on Earth. The Sang's family and Sang's Café has been a part of my family. When my mother passed, the Sang’s were there for myself, and my father—a customer for as long as Sang’s Café was open.

Our goal is to raise $7,000 or more to cover the expenses of writing the book. All the proceeds go towards what I discuss above. Everyone who donates over $5 will get their name at the end of the book as a contributor (please leave a notation if you want to be added to this list). Those who donate above $20 will get a signed copy of the book when it is completed. This GoFundMe aims to allow you, the future reader, to make the legacy that was Sang’s Café into something that our city will be proud that the stories are being told.

Thank you for making Sang's Cafe a part of Salinas's history, and the book The Legacy of Sang’s Café in Salinasinto a reality. I will be giving regular updates through GoFundMe and through social media.

James Edgar Skye
