Get to Know Dorothy:
My name is Dorothy Bartomeo, and I'm a proud mom of 5. My health has always been a little off, it all started when I was younger but got worse as I grew up. I started having the most trouble with my health in 2007 when I suffered a stroke just before heart surgery. I became half paralyzed on my left side, continued to have seizures and was diagnosed with more diseases than I can count. On Christmas Eve 2007 I found out I was not only half paralyzed , but also pregnant with twins. The pregnancy was practically me living at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park NY due to lack of weight gain, seizures, heart failure, and eventually a blood clot to my lung (pulmonary embolism). The twins were born early and I became ill after the birth. The c-section wasn't done right and I was bleeding into my belly (which took months to discover). The hospital called me an hour after they discharged me to tell me to come back immediately, I needed a blood transfusion now or I'd die. After they discovered the ball of blood in my belly the size of a grapefruit they had to remove it. During that surgery they accidently cut my bladder which left me with a catheter in to take care of my newborn twins while my husband worked. Eventually I healed up and was "super mom", I had stopped taking all of the medication prescribed except my basics from my life, my heart medicine, breathing, and tummy. I cooked and cleaned like an energizer mommy & I loved it! I felt better than ever, got married, and had my 5th child. I was 252lbs.. Today I am fluctuating around 135lbs... I cannot remember when I was this small, even if 5th grade I was a size 5, today a size 5 falls to the ground and I find myself "borrowing" my children's clothes. What happened? Who knows! Since the stroke I've seen doctors of all specialties - literally (gastroenterology, pulmonologist, endocrinologist, hematologist, cardiologist, rheumatology, infectious disease, if you can think of it, I've seen it). My bloodwork has little things wrong but nothing that signified what was wrong, high white count with no symptoms and extreme weight loss with continuous vomiting and gastric obstructions. No diseases, nothing wrong... Literally... They are making things up at this point, I have "mini clots" micro emboli - yet my bloodwork is normal. They've named that "A Hypercoaguable state of undetermined origin". I was told I have gastroparesis, SVT, asthma, hypoglycemia, hypotension, Chronic Obstructive Bronchitis, POTS, and adrenal insufficiency. I only take my prescribed medicine from my doctors that are required for me to stay alive.. I'm 29 years old and a mom of 5, I love my family with all of my heart, please help me be here for them. I included as much information as I could - I'll fill anyone in if I missed something. Funding will be used for medication not covered by insurance, surgery, and nutrtion suitable for my condition.
