WISE Women (MD) - Bond for Alberto

As of our February 10th deadline we raised $2170 for this important cause.
Unfortunately, this was not enough to secure the $12,500 bond needed for Alberto.
As stated on our page, we will be donating the net amount raised to C.A.I.R. (Capital Area Immigrant’s Rights)Coalition www.caircoalition.org to
provide legal help to other immigrant detainees at the Ordnance Road facility.
Since the welcome end of 287g in our County, ICE has retaliated by announcing the termination of the contract with the Ordinance Road detention centre. While we are happy that Anne Arundel County will no longer earn money from the detention of immigrants, as an organization that believes in justice and fairness for all, we are concerned with the immediate needs of the remaining 81 detainees housed at Ordnance Road. None of these men have a criminal record. They have fled situations of life and death and are simply trying to provide a better future for themselves and their families.
Gangs go after innocent people every day in Honduras. Innocent people are murdered in cold blood on a daily basis in Honduras and Guatemala, simply because they cannot afford to pay “taxes” or bribes demanded by the gangs. Gangs control parts of the country and rarely see consequences for their brutalization of innocent people.
Maryland WISE Women are raising funds for the men who have been deemed no risk by a judge, given bond but cannot afford to pay it. This is the case of a Guatemalan immigrant, “Alberto”, who is currently being detained at Ordnance Road Correctional Facility in Maryland. “Alberto” arrived in the USA with his father in September of 2018. He and his family experienced threats to their lives from gang members but the police chose not to get involved as the gangs are more powerful than the police. “Alberto” and his father believed that they would be next: many of their neighbors had been killed or disappeared by the same gang. So, with nothing but a small backpack, they started the long and dangerous journey north, as they fled for their lives.
“Alberto’s” father was released from ICE custody and is currently applying for asylum. His father and his brother currently live in New York. If Alberto could afford his bond, he would like to join his family in New York and earn enough money to apply for a visa legally. He needs to raise the $12,500 he needs to make bond by FEBRUARY 10, 2019.
If our goal is unmet by "Alberto's" bond deadline, all contributions will be given to C.A.I.R. www.caircoalition.org for legal representation of another currently held detainee.
