We have known from the beginning of our relationship that having a biological child of our own would not be an option for us. Now, after 10 years of marriage, we have decided the time is right for us to start our family through open adoption.
An open adoption is one in which the birthparents pick us, meet us and have a relationship with our family before and after the baby is born. It does not involve joint custody of the baby in any way, but rather treats the birthparents as a form of extended family. We feel that this is a healthy method of adoption for a child because from the very start they will know where they come from rather than always questioning their origins and why they were placed for adoption.
The Independant Adoption Center has specialized in open adoption for 30 years. They are a non-profit, non-religiously based organization that doesn't discriminate against potential adoptive couples based on race, religion, or sexual orientation. We feel this agency is the best fit for us based on their approach to adoption and their non-discrimination policies. Adoption costs can range anywhere from $15,000 to $25,000 for couples. This amount is based on a sliding scale that takes a couple's household income into account.
We are hoping to raise $10,000 towards our adoption costs. All funds will be used for agency fees, attorney fees, and home studies. The process to get a child could be a year or more, which is why we are starting our campaign now.
