Help Silen Wellington raise money for their first full-length solo show!
This performance weaves together electroacoustic music, spoken word, drag, dance, and ritual, exploring themes of legibility/illegibility, coherence/incoherence, survival/resistance, and the sacred/profane.
Over the years, I’ve developed a handful of solo pieces and now that I’ve graduated, I’ve decided it’s time to self-produce a full-length show and experiment with performing outside the concert halls of academia. The show ranges from dark, electronic expressions of gender dysphoria to gentle, reverent, pagan-inspired song. Music is intermixed with autobiographical spoken word poetry, describing my experience of being transgender, the collective trauma & escapism of queer culture, and the gifts and incoherence of queerness.
The overall show title Body like Scripture, is both a prayer and an assertion. Body like Scripture, as in my body is the sacred map I follow, all the guidance I need to lead me to the horizons I seek. Body like Scripture, as in, please let these worlds change, so we may value our trans bodies, please let these worlds change so we may listen more to the wisdom of our bones, these bones that have come from Earth and return, these bones that can call us forward into accountability, into dreams of sustainable futures. Body like Scripture, as in, maybe through witnessing this performance you can more deeply experience the ground of your being, let the reflection of my art echo-shine off some important place within you.
The show will have three performances:
*Saturday, September 14th, 10pm at the Mercury Cafe in Denver
*Sunday, September 15th, 7:30pm at Wesley Chapel in Boulder
*Monday, September 16, 7pm at Wolverine Farms in Fort Collins
I’m excited to also be working with some visual artist friends on this project! Boulder-based artist Shruti Kaul will be doing videography and Fort Collins-based artist Saskia Becker will do installation art.
What is all this money for? Putting on a full-length solo show requires a lot of resources! Funds raised from this campaign will go towards paying venue fees, paying my wonderful visual-art collaborators, buying a few XLR cables, printing programs, advertising, documenting the performances, and travel expenses.
