Our dear friend, Robert Steiner, needs our help during a health crisis. Many of us know Bob from his many years at Buck’s Rock Camp, where he was a beloved counselor and protege of Ernst Bulova. We – Paul Taub and Erica Babad – were friends with Bob at camp, and have known him cumulatively for 98 years! You are hearing from us because we know that you, too, value his friendship, generosity, wit, and experience as a mental health professional who has given so much to his clients and friends over many years.
Bob is scheduled for open-heart surgery for a primary cardiac tumor on Monday, August 14, to remove the tumor to avoid potentially serious problems. The tumor is probably not malignant (we won’t know for sure until after the surgery), but nevertheless this is a very serious condition that needs to be dealt with as soon as possible.
Luckily, a large percentage of the immediate medical expenses will be covered by Medicare and a recently-purchased supplemental policy. Unfortunately, in his current employment, Bob is an independent contractor with no sick leave. He gets paid only for the hours he puts in. Bob’s employment situation will not cover his living expenses while he is recuperating, an estimated 8-12 weeks. Already, pre-surgery, he is accruing extra expenses because of many days of medical tests that have required missing hours of work. Additionally, even with Medicare and a good supplemental policy, he is facing increased insurance costs, ancillary medical costs, and the cost of medications, which are not covered by his insurance plans.
Bob’s sons Mickey and Jamie will help take care of him in the period following the surgery, as will a number of nearby friends. But with this campaign, we will take care of the financial needs: rent, utilities, food, transportation, etc, as well as the previously mentioned ancillary medical expenses. Bob has estimated that he will need $15,000 to get through this crisis.
