Brookfield Math Circle was begun in Summer 2015 in Brookfield, Wisconsin. A high school sophomore, Simran Khunger, realized that there were few local opportunities beyond school for students gifted in math. Having been to multiple math circles in Chicago, she decided to bring her knowledge of creative mathematics to her own hometown and started out teaching 3 bright students in her own basement. Two years later, Brookfield Math Circle has moved to Brookfield East High School and has served over 50 students in the Southeastern Wisconsin area and continues to reach out to more.
But Brookfield Math Circle believes they have a responsibility to students beyond just those in the suburbs. A very real issue in education is that of girls: in the city of Milwaukee, opportunities for girls, due to cost and little encouragement, are lacking. So, to make a change close to home, we are starting the 'STEM and Flower' program in 2017. STEM & Flower is a program aimed at innercity Milwaukee girls and will provide a gentle introduction to the STEM fields with a focus on mathematics. We'll be fundraising and doing fun activities so we can provide more opportunities for girls in math.
To sustain STEM and Flower, Brookfield Math Circle will need a significant amount of money: for bus services, printing, and buying expensive equipment, such as Zometool, that these girls can typically not afford. Please donate generously to help us ensure that we can help Milwaukee's girls to the best of our ability.
Nevertheless, STEM and Flower has the potential to be so much more: a world-changing endeavor. A worldwide issue in education is that of girls: many are prevented from going to school because they are forced to marry, because of violence, or simply because of cost. You can help change this. While you're donating to help STEM and Flower, you can also help shift the status of girls' education around the world. At the end of every year of operation of Brookfield Math Circle, any funds not used to support STEM and Flower in Milwaukee will be donated to charitable foundations such as the Malala Fund and Let Girls Learn. Please help us as we try to make a worldwide difference!
