Bluegrass Las Vegas Victims Fund

My name is Brian Burns, President of the Southern Nevada Bluegrass Music Society in Las Vegas, which was founded in 1975. As you all know, our city suffered a devastating mass shooting in October of this year in which 58 people were killed and 548 wounded. While horrific and terrifying, this act of madness brought our city together in an outpouring of support I have rarely seen before.

While in no way remotely on the same scale, in a bit of unfortunate timing our club had been planning for over a year to hold our first bluegrass festival in over a decade. While we decided not to cancel it, we felt the only respectful thing to do was donate 100% of the gate to the official GoFundMe Victim’s Fund.

As the very first outdoor music event after the shooting, you can imagine the hesitation of folks to attend. However, while the festival was a substantial financial loss, we did manage to raise $5600 for the Victim’s Fund. 100% of this money will be distributed to the victims starting in January 2018 by local leaders. This is where we need your help and support.

SNBMS has reached out to IBMA to pass this request out to all bluegrass associations across America. We want to raise even more for the victims and challenge other clubs to try and collectively match our donation. Most of your clubs aren’t sitting on piles of money, trust us we know. What we are asking is for your club to pledge what you can. $1, $10, $100, $1,000. It all will make a difference.

We have just put in our $5600. Together I believe we can match this and much more. We are holding this fundraiser until January 4, when 100% of the money raised will be presented to the official GoFundMe Las Vegas Victims Fund.

While this tragedy occurred at a country music festival, we want you to imagine for a moment that it could just as easily happened at our event. Our at yours. Or in your city. While no amount of money can fix the horror these music fans endured, we can do our part to ease their suffering. I know the popular saying goes “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas” but I’m asking you to ignore that this one time. Let’s make what happened in Vegas all of our business and our mission to support the city that prides itself on taking care of it's visitors and showing them all a great time.
