Bill Shehan passed away peacefully at home at Pawleys Island on January 11, 2021. In order for his family to continue sharing Blue Whale Farm, memorials will be used to maintain his legacy and love of the four-acre property.
In 1980, Bill began the construction of his beloved Blue Whale Farm with the goal of sharing the Pawleys property with family and friends. A house he built himself of local pine was designed on a napkin at Litchfield Restaurant and enlarged over the years. Several outbuildings lent themselves to work and play, and his large vegetable and flower gardens produced gifts for others. The yard always welcomed parties, bonfires, oyster roasts, birthday and retirement celebrations, and wedding ceremonies, rehearsals, and receptions for dear friends. Even during his illness, "yard sits" in the sun or around the fire brought great pleasure to Bill, his family, and friends.
In addition to the house, Bill rebuilt a Stable into a "party barn" with a small kitchen and bathroom for outdoor parties. The BBQ Shed with gas and charcoal grills provides shelter on rainy days. Lights under the live oak trees illuminate handmade outdoor tables and a fire pit. The Chicken Shed holds gardening tools and serves as the screen for outdoor movies. The Gazebo, an intimate outdoor room, provides a quiet place to listen to music or bird watch. The two-story Red Barn is a woodworking shop with an art studio above. Each site provides the opportunity for friends to continue to enjoy the property, despite the expected future upkeep costs.
