Bloomington Homeless Coalition

The Bloomington Homeless Coalition (BHC) is a 501(c)3 charitable organization that collaborates with other local resources to provide aid to people experiencing homelessness here in Bloomington, IN. The purpose and mission of BHC is to advocate for and build community capacity to address the needs of unhoused people living in the greater Bloomington community, while including those being served in the coalition’s decision making and outreach programs. BHC envisions a world in which all people have autonomy, access to basic needs, and are treated with kindness, dignity, and respect regardless of their housing status; with a focus on helping those experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity. 

Being without permanent shelter is a difficult and dangerous way to live. Each year dozens of our unhoused neighbors die, several each year specifically as a result of exposure to the extremes of southern Indiana weather. 

Currently 100% of the funds we raise go toward providing our unhoused neighbors with vital basic needs supplies and supporting our outreach program. Frequently requested items include camping gear (like tents, tarps, sleeping bags), heat supplies (hand warmers, propane heaters, warm clothing), food and water, clothing, hygiene products, and transportation. We do our best to provide specific items that our unhoused community members request. Cash donations as well as donated items provide assistance for the specific needs of people living outside in all weather conditions. Monetary donations allow us to purchase items in bulk or at the lowest prices possible. There are three main ways in which we distribute these items. 1. People come to us and ask for something specifically; 2. Our outreach team visits people and different camps (with permission); and/or 3. We hold distribution events in the community.
