Blessings In a Backpack/Literacy

I teach high school students at Newcomer Academy, who have had limited or interrupted educational experiences in their native countries. Despite the many challenges that these students have faced (war, refugee camps, and hunger) they are eager to learn and thankful for the opportunities provided to them in our school community.

Our goal is to provide a welcoming, respectful, and safe environment for our English language learners. An unmet need for these students is a consistent, and nutritious meal. A significant challenge that interferes with their learning. "Food in a Backpack" would provide a weekend meal, along with an opportunity to continue with their literacy experience at home with some books and reading activities for our students throughout the school year. We want to help them not go hungry over the weekend, as many of them have limited resources and other challenges of a new country and culture.

This would help us make our school-home connection even stronger.  With your help we will not only provide a meal, but also nurture a literacy experience.

It costs $100 per student to provide "blessing" for the whole 2019-20 school year, or only $3.12 per weekend. Our school estimates to have about 100 9th graders at Newcomer. Any contribution, regardless of dollar amount is greatly appreciated. THANK YOU!!
