SUPPORT The Foundation for Black Women's Wellness ON #GIVINGTUESDAY AND HELP US ELEVATE BLACK WOMEN'S HEALTH

The Foundation for Black Women's Wellness is on a mission to empower Black women and girls in Dane County and across Wisconsin to live their healthiest, most well lives!  Never has our work been more urgent as we face some of the nation's most persistent health disparities and stubborn social and economic barriers that hamper and shorten the lives of Black women, our babies, and our family members. We won't rest until we move Wisconsin from the 'worst to the best' for Black women's health. We've already begun!

Each year we engage over 1,000 local women and girls directly with life-enhancing health education, wellness programming, leadership development, and advocacy that connects them to information, resources and opportunities they need to thrive.  Our social channels reach and inspire thousands more to prioritize their health and spark action in their families and communities to live their healthiest lives. Through powerful partnerships and alliances, we mobilize even more Black women and allies to be agents of change in their communities, and to advance Black women's health in big and small ways.

Why is the need so urgent you ask? Here's why:

In Dane County and the State of Wisconsin, Black women are more likely to:

• Live and die from largely treatable and/or preventable illnesses like cancer, heart disease, diabetes, stroke & Alzheimer’s.

• Have limited access to quality healthcare services and be uninsured or underinsured.

• Experience higher rates of cancer, more aggressive forms of cancer, and higher cancer mortality than our white peers.

• Give birth to babies who are 2 times more likely to be born too small and too soon, threatening their healthy development and their survival in the first year of life.

 • Experience higher rates of infant mortality—and are 3 times more likely to die in childbirth than our peers. Wisconsin leads the nation in Black infant mortality.

• Face social and economic barriers that contribute to and compound these and other poor health outcomes.

Black women of all ages in Dane County die at a higher rate than our White peers:

• 60 years was the average age at death for Black women in Dane County in 2015 (45 deaths). (Compared to 85 for White women)

•Wisconsin is the only state in the U.S. where Black women's life expectancy is not improving!

But we can change this. AND WE ARE!

"The Foundation for Black Women's Wellness workshops and cardiac rehab have been a Godsend to me. In 2017 I was diagnosed with congestive heart failure. With a pacemaker and medications now, I'm feeling good. I started walking regularly a few weeks ago!"
