Blackie's Big Hope
Donation protected
This is the story of a senior dog named Blackie that has been at a local animal control for five years now. We are his voice and it is our hope that by sharing his story with you, you’ll become a part of it.
There are many sensitivities surround this case. I am sharing Blackie’s story respectfully, with discretion, grace and hope for his future…and not just the sorrow of his past.
Five years ago, a local well known dog trainer, took his own life. Blackie, along with many other dogs that were both his and those who were surrendered to him, were taken into the care of animal control. All but one of the dogs were placed in homes, with great support from local rescues, friends and ongoing networking. Blackie, who was initially rescue only, is the last of the dogs.
I frequently drive by this facility. Countless times, I’ve slowed down, opened my window and called out a greeting to the sunbathing black dog with the frosted face. He seemed content enough but why was he still there? What was his story?
Week after week, month after month, and sadly- year after year, I’d drive by to see if he was still there. I emailed. I made inquiries. I had questions. All I really knew was that Blackie was and is rescue only. The facility has always been hopeful that it would happen. There really was no reason he was still there except that the opportunity hadn’t presented itself.
Blackie has always weighed heavily on my mind. I’d find reason to mention him to fellow dog lovers in conversation. Several shared with me that they too noticed this handsome boy and wondered what his story was. Recently, during an unrelated discussion with a trusted animal welfare advocate/rescuer, I mentioned this black dog that I’ve been rather fascinated with and curious about. To my great surprise, she knew exactly who he was. She knew his story. She had met him. She shared that staff took good care of him but it wasn’t the life he deserves and certainly not what they wanted for him. She has wanted to help but hadn’t been in a position to. Until now…
It’s time to take action. We plead for a life to be saved. Someone to help. Someone to do something. While we all are someone, there are situations where you need the right people on the front lines. I’ve never lost hope. I have never forgotten about him. I am incredibly grateful that ‘talking’ about him has led to this…but now the real work begins with the right people in place. With an approved rescue to pull, as well as the relief and support of the animal control that has well cared for him for five years, Blackie’s time has come.
Blackie is estimated to be about 10 years old. He is a very sweet boy and has maintained a pleasant and friendly disposition, despite his long stay in a shelter environment. Blackie has an opportunity to live in a home setting, maybe for the first time ever. It would not be permanent placement but rather a place where he can decompress, adjust to life outside of a kennel in a safe and responsible setting, and be offered professional rehabilitation and training as needed. This is a rescue mission. Not an adoption. The goal is to first understand Blackie’s needs and monitor his behaviors. To offer him patience, love and allow for an adequate adjustment period for his wonderful natural disposition to shine. Ultimately, setting him up for success and a beautiful life with a loving family for the rest of his days.
The expected minimum timeframe for his stay is 6 months, with the possibility of one year. We will build a team around him, with a shared passion to support, network and find his forever family. Blackie is a senior and has waited a long time for a family. While swift placement with an adopter is what all of our hearts would love, it’s more important to set him up for success. And that requires time. As with all things, money is needed. Blackie will need vetting- including and not limited to a full senior panel, wellness exam and preventatives to keep him healthy. He needs financial support for his weekly basic needs, as well as backing for rehabilitation services and his accommodations. While I completely respect and know from great experience that more specifics are typically what potential donors would like, if you know me, you know without question that this fundraiser is above board. The sensitive nature of this case is unique. Rest assured, you will see release photos and continue to be a part of his story as it unfolds. I will share progress reports. Vet records and test results. I will visit and take beautiful photos for sharing. Your trust, patience and support will be rewarded as you watch Blackie blossom! This isn’t just about raising the funds to sustain him. I hope it may inspire others…to be that voice, to tell that story…to never stop pushing to help someone or something you believe in.
This sweet dog just needs us to turn the page and his new chapter will begin.
