Black & Pink: Help build community!

Why the ask?
I am writing this letter to you in hopes that we can come together to help support the
Second Black & Pink National Gathering
of formerly incarcerated LGBTQ and/or HIV+ people and their friends. We are in a budget shortage of $20,000 for this gathering. With your support, we will be closer to our goal of ensuring that nearly 100 formerly incarcerated LGBTQ people can come together in Chicago for healing, community, and leadership development.

I set the goal here of $2,000, which will go to pay for flights, food, transportation around the city and a small stipend for our formerly incarcerated friends. At the equivalent of $500 per person, this money would pay for 4 people to make it to Chicago who wouldn't be able to otherwise.  The event happens at the begining of August, and I hope we can get this money together by then!

What is Black & Pink?
Black & Pink
is the largest network of LGBTQ and/or HIV+ prisoners, and this gathering will be one of the largest, ever, gatherings of formerly incarcerated LGBTQ and/or HIV+ people. Along with the great joy of our growth, there is also the challenge that this gathering is much larger than we had anticipated. We are in need of significant financial support in order to make the gathering accessible to all attendees.

Why I care about this
While this gofundme is on behalf ofthe larger B&P Boston Chapter, B&P is hugely important to me, personally.

I could nearly be an inside member, were I not as privledged as I am. When I was 21, I got arrested and charged with a felony, charges which were dismissed with the help of a good lawyer,  whiteness, and being a "good kid." My involvement in B&P started as an act of giving back.

But now, it is an act of friendship. I have a penpal, Todd, who I'm sure you've heard me talk about! We've been in touch for three years, and he is a great guy and a close confidant, and loves sappy love songs. I have another penpal, Frankie, who got out recently and is now a great friend, and who helped me do a headstand for the first time ever on the Fourth of July!

These and many other people are harmed by the system that Black & Pink seeks to end and to heal from. Every member of B&P has a different story, but that is mine. -Katie
