Anti Racism Art Display, Glasgow

Donation protected

Millions of people are currently raising their voices in response to the brutal murder of George Floyd and the ongoing situation of racial injustice in the US.

These protests reflect the outcome of legitimate frustration after decades of failure to reform.

Racism is not new, and it is not limited to the US.

As a person of colour living in the UK, the response across our country gives me hope for a better future, one where the impact of racism in the UK is acknowledged and not accepted.

It has been comforting to feel seen in my local community (Glasgow, South), and I want to encourage everyone to keep talking about racism and questioning what we can all do to support our POC community. As we continue to advocate in the memory of George Floyd, it is important to ensure the effect on our local community is long-lasting and not just surface level. We need a reminder that anti-racism is not just a passing trend; overcoming racism is a constant battle, and we must be persistent.

As a result, I have decided to commission a Black Lives Matter associated piece of art in my local community as a reminder that racism has no place in our society. I reached out to my community, looking for local business owners who would be interested in hosting the artwork, and I have received an overwhelming response.

It has now been confirmed that the first design will live on our own local bar, Gulp,in Shawlands, but that does not mean other businesses cannot take part. To be clear, the first display will not be the Black Lives Matter logo shown above but an associated design by the same talented artist who completed Oro's Stay Safe display.

Many people have asked to donate towards the cost of this commission (estimated £500), so I have set up this page to help fund the work.

This art will remind us that racism is present in the UK and that it is everyone's responsibility to tackle it at all times - not only when trending on social media. It will  show POC in our community that Glasgow cares, we are not invisible, and our experience matters.

Any funds which exceed the price of the original commission will be put towards further BLM-associated artwork on other Glasgow businesses, with any excess being donated to the anti-racism charity The Red Card.
