Black Liberation Ride 2021

The Black Liberation Ride is an annual family-friendly ride in Portland celebrating Juneteenth and black joy. This ride serves as a community-building ride, and also as a fundraiser. This year all proceeds from the ride will be donated to Brown Hope's Black Resilience Fund.

The Black Resilience Fund is a program of nonprofit Brown Hope and is dedicated to helping black portlanders by providing immediate and direct financial assistance.

"The Black Resilience Fund is dreaming for a lasting impact in the Portland region. In the face of persistent systemic inequities, we lift up community solutions for reparations-inspired action– free from bureaucracy and honoring the vital contributions of our Black communities." -Brown Hope

In 2020 there was an outpouring of support for the Black Liberation Ride in the wake of several nationally publicized tragedies in the black community. A year later a lot of that support has waned despite there not being any significant changes to the lives of black people. If you have been able to work this year, consider yourself a community ally, or benefit from any systems of oppression or privilege, please donate what you can to help Brown Hope continue to help the black community in Portland.

Check out this video made by the Portland Water Bureau for the 2020 ride. Having black people gather in these numbers is defiant of the history of Portland. The Black Liberation Ride brings strength in numbers to allow black riders and BIPOC allies to take up space on Portland roads and feel empowered. This event is a celebration of Juneteenth and of black joy, but at its core it is an act of defiance. Black people are not yet liberated so we ride for the cause each year. Thank you for your support, and ensuring that this ride can exist as a new Portland tradition.
