Hi all, this is Jillian Mercado and the BDC team. We're excited to say that we've been recognized by the Webby Awards team and encouraged to enter the 25th Annual Awards but we need your help!

The Black Disabled Creatives platform was created in reaction to the fact that one out of five people has a disability worldwide and yet the chances of being hired for a job, when qualified, are consistently undermined. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2019, among people with a disability, Black people had a much higher unemployment rate. ⁣We have work to do, and we’re starting here. Our disability and the color of our skin should not be used as a reason to not employ us. By showcasing creatives on a global scale, we aim to not only offer an accessible platform for hiring personnel but to help bridge the divide for creatives with disabilities.

Entering the Webby Awards comes at a cost but would help the platform gain marketing exposure and further promote the creatives on the site leading to more traffic from employers and agencies etc. Our hope is that BDC will serve as the standard example in excellence for the best web accessibility practices. We developed it for all sorts of disabilities, from color blindness to making sure we followed WCAG and ARIA guides, and even open sourcing some of our code to be used as an example for other web developers. We wanted to make sure that anybody featured or hiring was able to have easy access to the platform.

Our hope is that the future of web accessibility is a top priority for the world's leading agencies, but the current reality is, that it is not. We hope that with this nomination, we can bring that conversation to the forefront

Each category we plan to enter comes at a price of $385, and we believe that we have a strong chance of winning. We are making a mark in true web accessibility to serve all.

The categories are:

Activism
Community
Diversity & Inclusion
Best Practices
Best Responsive/adaptive Design for Mobile

From the day that we launched to now, we have had a fantastic outpour of support from everyone and as a team, we are thankful for the press, messages, and advice you all have given us.

What's next for BDC? We are planning to improve the site and introduce the following new sections:

- Organizations we support/recommend
- Resources for accessibility (graphic design, web/app developer focused)
- Advancing our help and support sections
- A place where brands or companies can post job listings

Submitting BDC to the Webby Awards for the following categories will cost about $2,000 together.

We are hoping to raise it with our community's help, you.

From myself and the BDC team, we want to thank you for sharing, donating, and being a part of the conversation.
