Birthday Fundraiser for SNIWWOC
For my birthday this year, I am asking for contributions from my community that I will be donating to the Support Network for Indigenous Women and Women of Colour (SNIWWOC).
This organization provides resources, services, and community connection to Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour. In their own words:
”SNIWWOC is a Canadian non-profit organization committed to the empowerment of women with food, art, and education. We address barriers that limit access to healthcare and full reproductive choice. SNIWWOC operates from a holistic and integrated service model that addresses the social, cultural and political realities of women who identify as black, indigenous, and people of colour (BIPOC).
We are headquartered in Victoria and offer programs and services in BC (Vancouver and Vancouver Island) and Ontario (Kitchener/Waterloo/Toronto).” (SNIWWOC, 2020)
My 21st year finally brought me to birth work and with it an opportunity to work toward a life of servitude, reparation, and justice. I am grateful to be listening and learning the experiences and barriers many BIPOC folks face in terms of reproductive health. These disparities in reproductive rights are compounded by intersections of oppression such as medical racism, environmental racism, colonialism, and capitalism. An important part of recognizing my role in the perpetuation of these issues and working toward ally ship/service is to financially support the autonomous, culturally safe reproductive justice work of BIPOC in my community. I encourage people to read their website, further research racial justice and the histories of oppression in our world via (Paid for) books/courses/podcasts, and have conversations with our communities about these topics and what can be done to support/solve them (let’s chat!). There is abundant opportunity to apply anti racist practices within the scope of our lives and work.
Any amount of financial support is appreciated and I will be donating to the cause as well. Thank you for contributing.
