Have you ever experienced a freedom that transformed your outlook and increased your ability to engage with life? I have. And then I had to give that freedom back... I am hoping you can help me to grab hold of that amazing freedom once again.
In October of 2017, my MS (Multiple Sclerosis)-trained physical therapist provided me with the amazing opportunity to participate in a four-week trial to test a Bioness L300+ unit on my right leg. Bioness makes a device that provides electrical stimulation to the muscles that control foot flexion and a second unit that provides support for the upper leg (either quads or hamstring muscles) in order to allow the knee and upper leg to move smoothly with each step (you can check them out at L300go.com for the leg units).
With the Bioness unit (upper and lower), my ability to walk was transformed! With the Bioness I walked normally after four long years of very limited and unsteady movement. With the Bioness, I was able to take wonderful walks in and around our neighborhood at least three times per week with my son (I had not been able to do anything like this for the prior 5 years). I found myself jumping at the chance to go places with little thought (and no worry) about whether I could make it, whether I should avoid certain places, or which assistive device I should bring with me (cane or rollater). My confidence increased dramatically. When you know what it feels like not to be able to do something as basic as walking very well there really are no words to describe the joy of being able to walk well once again. I am truly grateful for that experience.
The good news:
I was recently provided with a scholarship through a local MS Center to receive the lower Bioness unit to help with my walking. I never would have been able to purchase it on my own. I am so grateful for this amazing opportunity!
The challenge/opportunity:
When I did the 4-week initial trial, I used both the lower AND upper units of the Bioness because my body responded so well to having both units work together. My Physical Therapist would like for me to have both units if I can find a way... Because the initial scholarship covers only the lower Bioness unit and does not cover the upper unit, I am asking for your assistance so that I can purchase the upper unit. My dream is to be able to walk as well and as often as I possibly can so that I stay healthy, exercise, and serve my family and my community to the very best of my ability.
The cost of the upper Bioness unit plus the electrodes is $6,500. I have received financial assistance and scholarships that cover $3,000 of the cost and I can contribute $500. So, I need $3,000 to make this dream a reality! With the Bioness L300go device, I will be better equipped to support my family, I will be able to participate more fully in life and I will be able to exercise regularly.
