Bill Scanlon Care Fund

On Tuesday, November 17th, 2020, Bill Scanlon, 55 years old, began to experience stroke symptoms and was taken to the emergency room.   It soon became evident to the doctors that his symptoms were not the result of a stroke.  Reluctantly, Bill agreed to be admitted to the hospital despite a surge of COVID 19 patients.  With all visitation being restricted as a result of the pandemic, neither his wife of 30 years nor any of his four children could be with him for support.

The testing began.  The doctors received the results and arrived at a diagnosis.

Alone in a hospital bed, Bill was told by doctors to "get your affairs in order."  The diagnosis was Multiple System Atrophy  (MSA), which is a rare progressive neurodegenerative disorder.

MSA has been described as a mix between ALS and Parkinson's Disease, although it progresses rapidly. There is a progressive loss of movement, eventual confinement to bed, and death. There is no remission from the disease, and there is currently no cure. Thankfully, it is not hereditary.

Bill is a fighter and has faced so many more challenges in life than most people.  He has overcome all of those challenges.

Bill is not fighting this last battle.

Instead, he will use his precious time to connect more deeply with all of those he loves.

Although it seemed like it happened overnight, Bill likely has had the disease for some time, confirmed by the brain MRI. He thought his symptoms were related to severe depression and was confused about why he was not responding to any of the medications. Learning his symptoms were related to MSA helped to make sense of his recent struggles.

As a husband of 30 years and a father of four and a career as an RN, his biggest fear is not for himself but of burdening others around him.

As Bill gracefully and courageously moves through this chapter of his life's journey please consider supporting the burden of his care through financial or spiritual support.
