Big Horse Trek

Hi, my name is Bec and I have concocted this crazy little project I call 'Big Horse Trek' in order to raise as much money as I can for cancer research via the Love Your Sister charity.

The Love Your Sister charity is very close to my heart, as I know it is to a lot of people.  In 1996 my dad, Jack, lost a short battle with cancer.  There were a number of signs and symptoms in the months before his diagnosis that were not detected.  Would early detection have changed things?  Who knows.  But what we do know is that cancer research has come a long way since the 90’s, and this has filtered down into improved patient outcomes, improved medications, improved treatment options, and improved survival rates.  Supporting cancer research will assist in furthering these developments into the future.  I have watched other family members and friends go through the horrors of cancer, and I would like to see an end to this.

So what exactly am I doing?  I am taking up a challenge to myself to try and help Love Your Sister's quest to vanquish cancer.  After 10 years of sub-par health of my own, I am ready for a big adventure!  I will be traveling solo with two horses approximately 400km through Victoria along a route I have devised myself (following previous bigger trek plans that had to be adjusted due to trail closures as a result of ongoing drought and bushfire issues).

The more people I talk to about my trek, the more stories I hear about the impacts of cancer on individuals, their family, and/or their friends.  It seems that everyone is impacted by cancer in some way, and targeting the source of the problem (i.e. what the cancer researchers focus on) is paramount to ultimately finding cures for the various forms of cancers.  I am hoping to also help raise more awareness surrounding early detection for a variety of cancers, as early diagnosis and treatment can improve a person's survival rate and assist in their quality of life.  If through Big Horse Trek I can help just one person in this way, then I will deme the project a success.

The initial goal of Big Horse Trek is to reach a fundraising target of $53 300 (i.e. $10 per 1km of the BNT) for Love Your Sister.  Any amount donated (small or large) is greatly appreciated!  100% of all donations will go directly to Love Your Sister.

This page was set up to help me with the trek costs (which have been quite extensive, however I have had some amazing sponsors donate some great equipment for the trek).   I initially was aiming for $10 000, but have reduced my goal to $3000 to help with costs along the way (now that I am leaving in just 3 weeks).  This will help with costs of food for the horses and myself, along with some accommodation costs along the way, petrol, and transport for the horses (and myself!).
