My name is Jessica and I am creating this fund for my mom Donna. My mom suffers from "Achalasia" which is a rare disease and she is now on a feeding tube to help to save her life. Her health was declining due to weight loss stressing her heart and other organs. At her worst, she was 88 lbs. She's 54 and she lives in a rural area and has been unable to work for years. I wanted to start a Go Fund Me account to get her funds to help pay her bills and expenses to ease her burdens. Not only does she need help with bills, but help with travel to appointments and daily care from nurses to assist during rehabilitation after her major surgery.
She is in the stages of getting ready to have a major surgery called Esophageal Reconstruction that could ease her pain and help her eat properly again instead of just using her feeding tube. She has many medical conditions including a recent neck surgery to try to correct some bones in the top of her spine.
If you wanted to know some more information about her disease read on:
“Achalasia is a very rare and chronic disease characterized by impaired lower esophageal sphincter relaxation loss and of peristalsis in the esophageal body”. Basically, my mom lacks the ability to properly swallow food as her esophagus doesn't allow food to pass into her stomach thus the need for a feeding tube. My whole life I remember going to the hospital with her for day surgery to stretch her esophagus. She has had dozens of endoscopic balloon dilations procedures that require hospital stays each time to stretch her throat. It’s only a temporary measure but it is no longer effective.
My mom's doctor is Dr. Prashant Chandrakant Shah, MD. who is a Cardiac and Thoracic Dr. at Scott & White in Temple, Texas. We hope that if she gets some weight back the doctor could perform this complex surgery called esophageal resection. The doctors have told us it would be a very long and very difficult surgery but it could possibly repair her esophagus permanently. But, due to all her other medical issues, we all fear going back to work for her will not be an option.
Being unable to work for so long while in and out of hospitals for so many years has now left her bills piling up. This is causing her even more stress and sadness which breaks my heart to see her in this way.
Funds will help cover: Medical bills, rent, prescription meds, other bills, home care providers, transportation costs, and food. She lives in the country so taking a bus or Uber is not an option and she relies on others to drive her back and forth. She has a few people offering to give her rides but after a while, they started requesting her to pay for their gas and time. She wishes to maintain her independence in her small town duplex.
Anything helps to get my mom the proper treatment and care so she can be on the road to recovery and health.
Thank you in advance for your support and help. My mom and I really appreciate it.
