We recently lost a dear friend to a horrible disease. His name was Bruce Smith. It was an ordeal that took the Arboriculture industry by surprise and left many of us mourning a terrible loss Bruce did not want a funeral or for anyone to mourn his passing. But he did want to have a celebration of life. He wanted anyone and everyone who wanted to come together and celebrate, to do so in a placed he loved, Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, Sarasota Florida. I want to make that possible but i need your help. We are going to host the celebration as Bruce wished from 3 to 9pm November 2nd 2014. I don't want his wife, Lita, or any other family members to have to deal with another financial burden, so I am askng for your support. Give as little or as much as you would like. Arthur "Bruce" Smith 4/14/1959 - 6/20/2014
The Tree Industry lost a another great friend. Bruce Smith passed away from ALS on June 20th 2014. Bruce was co-owner of family run tree business with his wife Lita. He had been in the tree industry for more than thirty years. But that's the short story. What made Bruce's passing such a loss is he still had so much to give to the industry, his family and friends. Bruce was not one to boast about is works or accomplishments. So i will share a little about him. Bruce was a person who cared enough to give back to others. He served his Florida ISA chapter by being a board member, past president, chair of the FLTCC. He would perform educational workshops in conjunction with the chapters annual meetings. He would give his time to state and university training programs as an instructor and presenter. He did this to help his fellow arborists. Bruce gave his time to the industry serving on ISA ITCC committee, ISA test committee, special projects for the EGS committee such as publications and training videos including the Art and Science of practical Rigging. He served on the ANSI Z 133 committee. But his giving did not stop there. He donated his knowledge and time to go to Brazil and assist the new start up of the society of arboriculture there, doing tree worker training. Bruce loved to share his knowledge with others, he has performed hundreds of seminars and workshops on tree worker safety all over the US. He literally reached out to thousands of tree workers. Bruce gave talks at both the ISA and TCIA conferences. But one of his greatest gifts he gave to so many was that he would take the time to mentor, support and coach fellow arborists. If you had the chance to meet Bruce, you remember it. He will be missed. But Bruce like to share his story as one of a small acorn falling into the water. It may be small but it's effort and energy creates a ripple that can reach far and touch many. Even as he knew he was dying Bruce continued to reach far and touch many, he created a blog so he could encourage others, he spearheaded a fundraising team to walk for ALS. Bruce took nothing when he left this earth, but he left behind a ripple of sharing that will continue.
