WHO ARE BEYOND BOUNDARIES

Overview
Life changing moments:  the joy of your first cricket bat, the fun of a team, discovering life is about ability rather than disability or race, or being picked to play for your country – these are all what make sport so magical – at any level.

However, although sport creates common experiences for many, not everyone is lucky enough to be given those opportunities.

Beyond Boundaries has begun transforming lives through funding programmes which bring cricket, in all its forms, to young, disadvantaged and underrepresented people.

A young Scottish Charity founded 3 years ago we have funded participation camps in the east end of Glasgow for underprivileged children; support an annual national women and girls tournament; and ran a successful pilot programme, introducing sport through cricket, in 3 socially disadvantaged areas of Glasgow to over 600 boys and girls aged 5-18. (“Project Glasgow” see below).

These will each have brought transformational moments, however small.

Recent magic moments for Scottish cricket include a historic win against England and qualifying for tournaments at adult and junior levels. Moments like these inspire the next generation (and the existing one!) and they demonstrate that there are no boundaries to achievement for anyone.

Taking this passion and using it to spread sport wider, with a focus on inclusivity, is what we do, but we need funds to make it happen.  If we can help more people - regardless of race, gender, ability or age - to push beyond their boundaries, then we will all be winners.

 Our approach

As a young charity this will continue to be developed and refined. We have no staff allowing effectively all monies raised to be invested in the programmes we support.

Our strongly collaborative approach includes maintaining and developing strong working relationships with, for example, Cricket Scotland, local community groups and other appropriate charities, businesses and government bodies. This ensures our activities best meet local needs and are delivered cost effectively.

As well as benefitting the participants we also actively encourage volunteering opportunities for young people from the local communities which helps build their self-confidence and employability skills.

As well as promoting programmes of our own, we also aim to provide funding direct to local communities/organisations underpinned by appropriate applications.

A practical example: Project Glasgow - Active children, Cultural connections
Glasgow faces many social challenges. Over 33% of the population lives in 10% of the most deprived areas of Scotland.  Many young people have no access to activity or even social interaction within their communities and cultural dividescan be strong.

Project Glasgow ran a cricket training programme aimed at targeting inactivity amongst children in some of the more deprived areas: Springburn, Govanhill and Pollokshields.  Key to the programme was parental/carer involvement, as well as engaging with young people up to the age of 18 to encourage active lifestyles.

A pilot programme for potential roll out more broadly across Scotland, the five outcomes targeted in “Project Glasgow” in 2019 were to:

•       Increase opportunities for young people to engage in physical activity and enable the inactive to become active

•       Empower volunteers to develop transferable skills to increase employability chances

•       Improve the life chances of participants in disadvantaged areas by offering life skill workshops promoting positive life choices

•       Connect communities socially and reduce isolation

Create sustainable hubs using a wide remit and through partnership with other organisations

Summary

We may be young, but we have already proven that we can help change lives. For example Project Glasgow, our pilot project for young people and community engagement, is a true example of excellence.  The outcomes demonstrate what can be done using local volunteers and some financial support.

Beyond Boundaries intend to develop the template of Project Glasgow into a Beyond Boundaries HOWZAT Programme to empower others to roll out similar programmes across Scotland, reaching more disadvantaged communities.

We are delighted that Callander Cricket Club have chosen to support Beyond Boundaries - financial assistance is critically important for a small, start up Charity like ours.

This will help Beyond Boundaries to continue to find ways to allow and enthuse more young, disadvantaged and underrepresented people in Scotland to choose an active lifestyle and connect across cultures. This will also provide further powerful examples of using cricket in Scotland to change lives – both objectives I am sure  will be close to the heart of many involved in the Callander Virtual cricket match.
